Things to do in Chloride
What could there possibly be to do in a 160-year-old 1 square mile town? LOTS!
Mohave County Park
Recently renovated with new slides and climbing feature. The park also has a covered picnic area, swings, horseshoe pits, a tether ball, and a basketball court.
Chloride Baptist Church
Home of the oldest continuously operating church in Arizona.
The Mineshaft Market
Chloride's general store has a very wide selection of groceries and souvenirs. It is also a registered AZ Visitor Center with lots of information about local attractions.
Chloride Cemetary
The cemetery has headstones that date back to the 1800s - and yes sometimes some deer.
Down the street, you will find the first miner's graves. Look up from their graves and you will find the first original mines.
Roy Purcell Murals
In the 1960s, Roy Purcell, a local hippie, went on a spiritual journey in the hills outside of the back of town. He painted a 200ft mural about his journey from the darkness to the light. In the 1980s he returned with his son and repainted the murals with car paint. Ask a local about the current road conditions before trying to find them.
Rock Hounding, Exploring
All around the surrounding hills, you can find rocks of all kinds. If you get lucky you might even find some silver!
Train Depot
Twenty-five miles of track were built in 1899 to deliver ore from the mines but was expanded to carry passengers to Kingman. The station originally sat on the other side of Silver Hill but was moved to next to the last remaining pieces of track.
Jim Fritz Museum
Lived in by Jim Fritz and his sister. They were known to feed the miners. His sister donated the house to the Historical Society. It sits inside of Cyanide Springs and holds much of Chloride's history. Open Saturdays 10-2.
Jail
Built in 1917, this two-room jail cell was the nighttime residence of many miners. Electricity was added in 1937. Visitors are currently not allowed inside since it needs major repair.
Strange Art
You will find art all around town and most is from the mines but make sure you check out these masks outside the museum. Hint: view them through the camera on your phone!
Camping - Windy Point
Above Chloride you will find excellent dry camping ground. For $8 a night, you will find a campground that is well maintained by Mohave County with private camping areas, bathrooms, and amazing views.
Cyanide Springs
Built and rebuilt many times over the years, walking into to Cyanide Springs and you are transported to the Wild Wild West. Located in the center of town and named after the deadly chemical needed to extract silver from stone.
Trails
There are hours of trails to explore. Hikers, horses, and off-roaders will find trails of all levels with lots of history and beautiful scenery to explore.
Gun Fights
On some Saturdays - you might be able to catch a gunfight in Cyanide Springs!
